Beamtree – Performance Indicators for Coding Quality

We worked with Pavilion Health (now Beamtree) to develop a software-as-a-service (SaaS) analytics product based on research from the University of Sydney which could analyse very large volumes of coded hospital data, looking at the quality, compliance and specificity of clinical coding.

We developed a simple, easy-to-understand domain-specific language (DSL) which could be used by Health Information Managers (HIMs) and clinical coding specialists to write indicators to assess various aspects of coding quality. Over time, many thousands of indicators were developed. These could be used both to provide real-time feedback to clinical coders, helping them to improve their coding and correct any issues prior to final submission, and to analyse teams and sites to identify areas requiring attention.

We worked with hospital IT departments around Australia and New Zealand to design a data submission process that was secure, reliable and easy to set up. We worked with clinical coders, managers and health service executives in the public and private sectors to design dashboards and reports that gave them access to the right information at the right time to make a material difference to coding quality, compliance and billing.

We pioneered the design and implementation of a secure cloud-based processing service, trusted with more than 80% of all episodes of hospital care in Australia. Today, as part of Beamtree’s coding and data quality suite, PICQ and its sister product RISQ are seen as the gold standard in benchmarking coding and clinical quality, operating in a growing list of countries around the world.
